We don’t have any immediate plan to devalue the naira - Emefiele

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, says the Apex bank has no immediate plan to devalue the Naira despite the continued downward slide of the Naira. Emefiele said this after the meeting of the bank's Monetary Policy Committee yesterday January 26th.
"We don’t have any immediate plan to devalue the naira. However, we are already working on different scenarios; the models are being worked on.
We have them and as much as possible, we will look at scenarios under different crude prices and we will continue to discuss at management and monetary policy committee levels. We will try as much as possible to continue to share our thoughts with the fiscal authorities with the view to harmonising our positions to ensure that notwithstanding the drop in crude prices, that we are able to continue to run government and do business. We are very conscious of this and we know that we are at an era where the drop in or low crude price will remain for a long time with us. It is not going to be like in 2008 or 2009 where it was just for about eight months. So far, we have seen this for 14 months now and there doesn’t seem to be any light at the end of the tunnel.”he said
He said Nigerians should brace up for a longer period of low government revenues from oil sources due to the declining oil price
“The committee observed that the last episode of low oil prices in 2005 lasted for a maximum period of eight months. However, the current episode of lower oil prices is projected to remain over a very long period. Consequently, it is imperative to brace for a longer period of low government revenues from oil sources, which would necessitate hard and uncomfortable choices as the economy transits to more sustainable sources of revenue, consistent with the economic realities and strategic objectives of the country. In the circumstance, certain trade-offs must be envisaged and duly accommodated.”

Tinubu accuses PDP members of trying to create a feud between him and Buhari

APC National leader, Bola Tinubu, has accused PDP members of the trying to create a feud between him and President Buhari. In a statement he released through his media aide, Sunday Dare, Tinubu said recent publications on social media tagged, ‘Destroy the reputation of Tinubu and his relationship with Buhari’, shows that some disgruntled members of the opposition were out to cause trouble. He stated that he has never granted any interview discussing Buhari and the 2019 election. The statement reads in part;

"The individuals behind the plot are mostly scared PDP elements made frightened by the Buhari anti-corruption campaign. They direct this falsehood at Tinubu in the futile mission of trying to drive a wedge between the President and Tinubu to disrupt the progress being made against corruption and to destabilise the APC. But their PDP is already something by-gone, buried under the mass of its corruption and wrongdoing. They fight for a cause that has no cause. They are mercenaries of all the ills and defects that the people want excised from our body politic. Thus, we must do the people a public service. In the last six weeks, the Tinubu Media Office has monitored the stream of false, distorted media accounts written against Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We have learned that there is a concerted, wilful campaign tagged, ‘Destroy the reputation of Tinubu and his relationship with Buhari'. As part of this ugly plot to cultivate the worst of lies against the national leader of the APC, several blogs and online sites recruited to launch this smear campaign have manufactured stories to advance this sinister plan to taint the public mind with gross lies disguised as news reports and interviews. Fallacious headlines such as ‘Reasons why I collected N9m-Tinubu’ and ‘I will not return N9m-Tinubu”. “I am afraid PDP will stop Buhari in 2019 – Tinubu,’ are being paraded. Try as hard as they can the creators of these false tales and misleading headlines will fail miserably. Their stories cannot stand up to the slightest scrutiny. They are patently false and we condemn in the strongest terms those involved in this anti-Tinubu racket. “While these fellows may think themselves cunning, they might have outwitted their very selves. In writing these stories, they have committed clear libel. In abusing the media office letterhead and name, their misrepresentations amount to forgery. They laugh now but walk on thin ice. Soon, that ice will break and they shall have nothing but the weight of their wrongdoing to blame for their predicament that will soon come. After identifying the bloggers and paid hatchet writers perpetrating these wrongs, the Tinubu Media Office is taking the step to alert the public to beware and be weary of hatchet writers, false prophets and paid bloggers. The Tinubu Media Office has the names and online sites recruited for this campaign and will not hesitate to make them know if they do not desist from their negative mission"he said

Parents take two-month-old baby to a plastic surgeon because of her ears

Amy Klein and her Husband had infertility issues for 4 years and fortunately, they got blessed with a precious little girl. The parents of this 2 month old baby who thought their baby's ears were protruding weren't happy about her ears and thought that their baby may be made fun of when she got older and had to go to school, so they took her to a plastic surgeon. Read what she wrote below:

"My husband was rocking our two-month old daughter on his knees when I walked into the room and screamed: “WHAT HAPPENED TO HER EARS?” He turned his head, alarmed. “What happened?” he said. “Her ears!” I said. “They’re huge!” .“Oh.” He relaxed. Nothing was really outstanding.
"But there was something outstanding: her ears. From behind they loomed large, like protruding handles. I’d never seen her from this angle. Normally I was over her, breastfeeding her, changing her, or putting her to sleep. When I took her out for summer walks, her dainty features and luminous eyes always got so many comments. “She’s beautiful!” people would say.
But lately I’d been noticing a new type of comment: “She looks really smart!” Was that the equivalent of saying an unattractive woman had a “great personality”?
Don’t get me wrong: after four years of infertility I was so grateful for my daughter, who really is adorable. Trying to get pregnant for so long meant I also swore that I wouldn’t be one of those helicopter over-achieving parents, hoping to get my kid on a path into Yale by age two. My husband and I were pretty laid back, jeans and t-shirt type of people, even though we’d both had cosmetic surgery (him, a nose job; me, a stem cell face lift.) But this wasn’t just about looks — it could affect how other kids would treat her.
“I have big ears,” said a friend to whom I made the unfortunate choice of confessing my ear worry without first checking out hers.
“Oh, was it a problem for you?” I innocently asked. “Well, aside from being called Dumbo in grade school…” she said. Argh.
What to do? Online mom forums were no help, because anyone who asked about the issue of big ears got attacked by the other mothers who found their own kids’ protruding ears adorably yummy. (One mother defended a questioner by saying, “Kids are cruel, and most of you folks wouldn’t think twice about someone’s decision to circumcise their child or pierce their ears, so what’s the issue with this??”)
“Newborn moms spend too much time examining their babies because they have too much time home alone with them,” my doctor said. But then I turned her around. “Oh, I see what you mean,” he added. He told me she’d probably grow out of it, that it was due to her sleeping on her back.
The plastic surgeon didn’t agree. Yup, that’s where we took her after investigating other options, like the Baby’s Bonnette from France, which was a netting hat that promised to hold babies’ ears down during sleep, or the Ear Wells from England, small ear-shaped plastic “splints” that corrected ear deformities and “bat ears,” which is what my daughter had. My husband wanted it done professionally.
“Your daughter’s ears are not going to flatten out after she spends time on her tummy,” said Doctor David A. Staffenberg, who specializes in craniofacial surgery. (Boy, did I feel horrible when I was chatting with another mother in the waiting room who told me her daughter needed surgery to split the skull bones open.) He said she was the perfect candidate for Ear Wells, a more cumbersome splint which shaped and caged the ear in plastic and held it to a baby’s head. The only problem? We were quite late to the game. It had taken me a over a month to take action — and now the cartilage was beginning to set.
"Some mothers come to me straight from the hospital,” said Nurse Practitioner Amanda Young, who said she’s splinted about 250 babies’ ears, and Dr. Staffenberg ten times that amount. I flinched at the cost — $350 for the first pair, and then after ten days, if another set was needed, another $250.
“It’s cheaper than plastic surgery,” said Dr. Staffenberg, noting that from the age of about 6 or 7 ears could be pinned back in surgery under anesthesia, which can cost around $8,000.
“And painless,” Young added. She’d had some six-month-old patients with promising results, although she wouldn’t guarantee any for my baby.
“What’s the harm?” my husband said.
Indeed. Aside from looking like she had a Bluetooth on each ear, and the judgment I got from anyone who saw it (until I started lying and saying it was for an infection). Oh, and the fact that she didn’t like it, demonstrated by the way she furiously turned her head from side to side to fall asleep. The left one came off after a day.
“Most babies don’t notice it,” Young said, replacing the Ear Well free of charge. The pair lasted almost until the next appointment, and for the last few days we taped the ears down with the medical tape they’d given us. (The nurse practitioner said that in the south, that’s how everyone does it!)
And guess what? Her ears improved. At the appointment the staff agreed she didn’t need any more intervention. She was perfect.
…Except for her cheeks. Without protruding ears, didn’t they look rather large?

Two Base jumpers drown in Big Sur tragedy

A BASE jumper who parachuted off a bridge overlooking the Pacific Ocean likely drowned, as did the man who heroically jumped in to try and save her, according to police.
The two thrill-seekers have been missing in the Big Sur area since Saturday morning.
Monterey County Sheriff's officials say a video from a helmet camera shows Mary Katherine 'Katie' Connell, of Ventura, descending nearly 300 feet and landing on Bixby Creek, which feeds into the Pacific.

Shortly after the landing, three large waves overtake her and she vanishes from view, presumably having been dragged out to sea.
Sheriff Steve Bernal says her companion, identified as a BASE jumping instructor from Finland, then leaped off the bridge to help her, reported the station KION.
While the male victim's name was being withheld by the authorities pending the notification of next of kin, it is believed that the man who attempted to save Katie Connell was Rami Kajala.
According to his Facebook page, Kajala, a Finnish national, was a BASE jumping instructor and flight suit designer who was friends with Ms Connell.
His final status update, dated January 13, featured more than a half-dozen photos of the young woman jumping from a cliff in Perris, California, in one of Kajala's custom-made 'tracking' suits.
According to his website and his social media postings, Kajala had been BASE jumping since 2003 and had 2,500 jumps to his name. In 2013, he started the company RavenBase.com, which manufactures and sells tracking suits designed to fly.
'BASE' is a term that stands for four categories of fixed objects from which one can jump: building, antenna, span and Earth. Practitioners of the extreme sport parachute or wingsuit-fly from man-made structures or cliffs.
In BASE jumping, tracking is a freefall technique in which jumpers assume a forward position that would take them away from the fix object, be it a cliff or a bridge, as they fall.

Kajala, who referred to himself as a 'master jedi tracker,' operated a BASE jumping school offering courses in the art of tracking.

Oprah Winfrey made $12 million from one tweet about bread

Oprah Winfrey just made more news, saying she lost 26 pounds on her Weight Watchers diet. Even better, her wallet got a lot fatter. According to Market Watch, Winfrey racked in a whopping $12 million for merely writing about how she was able to lose weight and still eat bread.

"I lost 26 pounds, and I have eaten bread every single day," she said in her testimonial clip.
An hour after O sent her story into the Twitterverse, Weight Watchers shares climbed slightly over $2 a share, and since Winfrey owns roughly 6 million shares, the surge in share prices made the celeb $12 million just like that.
Oprah as a board member and large share owner of the company. She's made a fortune since her October investment. Using a price of $13 a share from Tuesday afternoon, that means she's made $61 million on her total investment.

On a per-pound basis, that's $2.36 million of profits gained for each pound lost.
She has the best of both worlds: getting richer while getting slimmer.
Oprah's October investment came at a price of $6.79 per share. She bought about 6.36 million shares, which cost her $43.2 million.
She was also granted 3.51 million options to buy shares at that same $6.79 price. Combining shares and options, her total stake is worth almost 10 million shares — 9.88 million shares to be more specific. The stock has practically doubled in that time, even including the rapid decline in the past several weeks.

"We must deliver now, or get kicked out of office-Bukola Saraki

Photos:

Senate President, Bukola Saraki said the nation’s political office holders have no choice but to deliver on their promises to the people, adding adding that those who fail to deliver would risk being voted out by the electorate in the next elections...

Saraki stated this in a goodwill message he delivered at the 2016 National Political Summit held on Monday, January 25 in Abuja. He also said that the 8th National Assembly will work closely with the executive to eliminate corruption and entrench accountability across all spheres of the public sector.
The Senate President cautioned that discretionary spending of government resources, unbudgeted expenditures, procurement abuses and diversion of public monies for personal gains must stop.

"The 2015 general election has changed Nigeria for good. Its implications will continue to redefine the Nigerian political space for sometime to come. For the first time, the voice of the Nigerian people was definitive and unmistakable. They wanted change.
"For those of us who by this election have been entrusted with shaping the destination we travel from now, there is a clear and distinct warning, the change demanded by Nigerians from the 2015 election is not without consequences.

"The victory was won out of turmoil and strife. It was an election won on the belief that Nigeria, together, is our best chance of becoming the greatest of all black nations.‎
"This victory represents the abiding desire and struggle of the Nigerian people to build a just and decent society where the people matter and are the reason for government.
"This was a victory won with sweat and blood for Nigeria to turn this page. The change Nigerians demanded from the 2015 electoral victory is based on the idea that Nigeria can be made great again through a dedicated and law respecting political class with the right political value and vision," he stated.

According to him, the present hardship is a blessing in disguise as it would definitely challenge the leaders and Nigerians at large to think out of the box and evolve innovative solutions to weather the present economic storm.

He said the National Assembly is reinforcing its oversight role to ensure procedural and output integrity in the administration of the country adding that the National Assembly will work with the executive to root out corruption in the country.

Photos: Hidden safe found during demolition of a mansion once owned by drug lord Pablo Escobar.

A safe was discovered hidden inside a Miami mansion that once belonged to notorious Colombian drug lord, Pablo Escobar. Construction workers found the safe in the building's foundation during demolition.
The mansion, now owned by a restaurateur and a TV journalist, is being removed to make way for a more modern building. It was confiscated by the U.S. government in 1987 and sold at auction. The current owners purchased it in 2014.
"It was in the ground under some marble and was discovered by some of our workers, but before we even had a chance to remove it, it was stolen, so we've been working with police on that," Jennifer Valoppi, who co-owns the property with her husband, said in an interview with the BBC.
Escobar was known to have squirreled away much of his funds and drugs during the years he spent on the run, as much of it couldn't be kept in banks or laundered. He died in a shootout in Medellin in 1993.
De Berdouare, the owner, believes the Miami house was used "to conduct illicit trade," and he's therefore happy to see it torn down.
"We’re demolishing the house of the devil. Pablo Escobar was one of the biggest murderers and criminals in the world."

SA white lawyer brutally assaulted outside court by angry crowd for defending suspected child killers

Photos:

Lawyer Nico Du Plessis was assaulted and beaten outside the Tonga Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga, South Africa on January 21 for defending suspected child killer. The lawyer said he dreads returning to court this coming Wednesday.

"I was really scared, I thought I was going to die especially when they mentioned that I would be killed. I sustained various injuries. I went to the doctor who examined me and gave me a J88 form. It shows marks around my neck where I was strangled with my tie, I have bruises and injuries due to being kicked all over my body,” said Du Plessis.
He explained that the crowd was angry with him because he was representing two men charged with the murder of a 3-year-old girl, whose body has never been found.
"I was attacked because I represented two accused in court and I wanted to apply for bail for them. I don’t feel safe anymore. However, I will have to ask the police to secure the place so that I can proceed with the case.
The case involved the kidnapping and possible murder of the girl on November 29 last year. The accused, Luis Sithole, Sfiso Mazibe, Themba Myambo and Jabulani Ndlovu have been charged with murder, despite the lack of a body. Du Plessis is representing Myambo and Ndlovu. He said he will take legal action against his attackers.
"I am busy opening a case in Nelspruit. I will submit my statement this week to the police."
He said the Director of Public Prosecutions had refused to move the case to a safer venue.
Meanwhile, Tonga police spokesperson Lieutenant Mzwandile Nyambi says police will be at the court to make sure there isn't another attack on Du Plessis
"We will deploy more police in court to make sure that the incident doesn’t happen again. We urge residents not to take the law into their own hands," he said.

We can’t hand over Tompolo to JTF, EFCC; we don't know his whereabouts - Ijaw elders, youths

Ijaw elders in the Niger Delta say that they cannot hand over former Niger Delta Militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo aka Tompolo to security agencies because they don't have the power to do and also do not know where he is at the moment.

A High court in Lagos last week gave a warrant for Tompolo's arrest after he failed to appear in court to answer some fraud cases he is alleged to have committed.

The Ijaw elders who spoke differently with Vanguard, said it will be unfair for the Federal government to ask them to produce Tompolo and those who carried out the recent attacks on oil installations.

According to them, if the security officials with all their intelligence cannot locate Tompolo, how can they who are mere civilians know his whereabouts.

Chairman, Ijaw Okosu –Otu (Ijaw Council of Elders) in Delta State, Chief Bare Etolor, said
“It is unfair for the Federal Government to ask Ijaw communities to handover suspects that carried out the bombing because we do not know them. In addition, I do not see how anybody expects us to handover Tompolo to security agencies because we do not have the power to do that, except they want to humiliate us. It is unfortunate that the Presidency wants to handle the matter from this angle. Which of the Northern elders did they tell to produce the Boko Haram leaders that are bombing in their areas. So, why are they telling us to handover people who bombed pipelines here? If they know the person that did it and ask us to help produce the person and we see him, we can assist with information if we have any. How can anybody say Ijaw leaders should handover suspects? We do not know who did it. It is not right. Even if they tell us the person, we do not have arms to arrest anybody. What they are doing is to make us not to have confidence in this government. What power do we have over armed militants? We can only talk to them as elders, not arrest them with guns. I am not supporting criminality. In fact, anybody among us, the Ijaw elders, can be a victim anytime. It is difficult for us to produce Tompolo. If they cannot see him with all their intelligence, where do they expect us to see him? I have not even seen Tompolo myself for ages.”he said
Another Ijaw leader in Gbaramatu kingdom, Chief Godspower Gbenekame, while speaking on the matter, said
"How can you say we should hand over Tompolo to the EFCC, are we security agents? If he had dealings with EFCC, they should arrest him. Why are they calling Gbaramatu elders? What I know is that Tompolo made many enemies when he worked for the Federal Government to guard the pipelines. He burnt illegal refineries, razed boats and these people are not happy. He has been a partner to the government all this while, that is why we called for a political solution to the matter.”
